Google calendar question

Is there any way to set the default for new items to not have reminders? I'm failing to find it.
Also, is there any truly compelling reason I should join Google+? (eta: I am not on facebook and have never really had any true desire to join it. Also, I keep very distinct google identities for myself professionally and personally.)

This might be a good thing if you don't want to join, but want the notices. Or if you don't want to get the emails you can join and then not look at it to keep the spam down. The third option is to filter G+ emails so you can just ignore it all.
I have joined, but am not sure how it will be part of my daily world.
